Rugby League 9s game day: sets of four, unlimited interchange, and a fair run for all nine.
Nines is league at tournament pace: nine a side, two 9-minute halves, sets of four tackles, unlimited interchange from a team of 15, a try worth 4 or 5 in the bonus zone, and a conversion the try scorer drop-kicks straight after. Kickd is adding it in the next app update, going into the stores now.
How Kickd scores 9s
Four values, and the kick asked for you.
Tap the score, tap the scorer. Because the scorer takes the kick in 9s, the conversion prompt comes up on its own with their name on it: one tap for the goal, one for the miss. The top bar, the season table and the Player of the Match vote all run on the real points, and the set log counts the try as the set’s end.
Any try outside the bonus zone. Tap the score, tap the scorer.
A try grounded in the bonus zone, its own button and its own column on the season table.
A drop kick by the try scorer, from U10. Kickd asks GOAL or MISSED the moment the try is logged, with the scorer already on it.
Golden point only. The button is there from U10 and stays out of the way until you need it.
Rugby League 9s questions, answered
Kickd is an Australian game-day app adding Rugby League 9s in its next update: a live 9-a-side field with unlimited interchange and fair minutes, sets of four logged for both teams, every try at its value with the scorer attributed and the conversion asked the moment the try goes down, on the phone or tablet you already own.
What is Rugby League 9s?
Nines is rugby league in a tournament format: nine a side on a full field, two 9-minute halves, sets of four tackles, no scrums, and unlimited interchange from a team of up to 15. A try is worth 4, or 5 from the bonus zone, the try scorer drop-kicks the conversion, and there are no penalty goals. Operators such as TFW9s run it as kids’ tournaments over a day or a weekend. Kickd is an independent app and isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by any tournament operator.
How is 9s scored?
A try is 4 points, or 5 when it is scored in the bonus zone. From U10 the try scorer takes the conversion, a drop kick worth 2. There are no penalty goals, and a field goal, worth 1, exists only in golden point. Kickd logs each score at its value with the scorer on it, raises the conversion prompt as soon as the try is logged, and the season table splits tries and bonus-zone tries as well as points.
How long is a 9s game?
Two 9-minute halves with a 2-minute break at every age under the TFW9s rules, on a continuous clock. Kickd starts a 9s team on 9-minute halves, offers 7, 8, 10, 12 and 15 as one-tap options, and takes any length from 5 to 20 minutes, so the clock matches the draw.
How many players are on the field in 9s?
Nine at U10 and up, six at U6 to U9, from a team of up to 15 (12 for the minis), with unlimited interchange. Kickd’s live field is 9-a-side with wings, centres, five-eighth, fullback, halfback, dummy half and lock, a numbered rotation grid at U6 to U9, and a TEAM SIZE setting for comps that play 7 or 8.
Can I rotate 9s players with a set partner?
Yes. Pair players under PARTNERS on the TEAM tab and, at every rotation, a player’s partner comes on in their spot and they swap back the next time. With 15 on the sheet that is six pairs and a group of three: two play, one rests, and one comes in as one goes out each rotation. Auto-fill starts one of each pair, and on a tournament day each game starts the one who rested the game before.
What does the set log show?
Every set is four tackles. Kickd marks each of your sets complete or not and records what ended it: a try, a kick, a handover on the last tackle, an error or a penalty. Both teams’ completion % sits above the field during play, and at half time you get the set-by-set breakdown, the same card rugby league teams use in Kickd, counted in fours.
When can I use Kickd for 9s?
Coming now. Rugby League 9s is built and in the next Kickd update, which is going into both stores now. Adding a sport needs a new app build, so leave your email on this page and we will tell you the moment it is live.
Can I run 9s on the Rugby League setting in the meantime?
You can run the clock, the score and the minutes on Rugby League today. The shape is not right: league’s set log counts six tackles, its senior interchange counter caps at ten, and there is no rotation alarm at U10 to U12, where the junior laws forbid rolling subs. Nines is unlimited interchange on sets of four, which is why it is its own sport in Kickd, with the rotation alarm, rotation pools and partners at every age.
What will Kickd cost for a 9s team?
The same as every sport in Kickd. Your first 3 matches are free at the full Team Stats level, no card needed, then the team buys one pass for the season: Team Pass for the essentials, or Team Stats for the full stat set and the set log. Both include Kickd Callout voice logging. Parents, players and supporters always join free with a code.
